Holger H. Meinel

Independent Consultant & Automotive Radar Expert, Independent

Holger H. Meinel joined the AEG-TELEFUNKEN Advanced Technology Department in Ulm, Germany, in 1973 after graduating as a Dipl. Ing. from the RWTH AACHEN in Aachen, Germany. As a research and development engineer, he designed components for a 35 GHz Anti-collision Radar for cars. Following this, from 1976 on, he was the Supervisor of the Radar sub-systems - and of the millimeter-wave integration group, respectively, responsible for the development of hybrid technology for millimeter-wave radar and communication systems with emphasis on commercial and scientific applications, before he became Manager of the RF-Systems Department in the Radar Division of AEG-TELEFUNKEN in 1983, having been responsible for the development of ECM- and Radar Systems up to the millimeter-wave range.

From February '85 to December '86 and from March '87 to May '88 he was on leave from AEG, working with MDTT, Inc. in Orlando, FL, USA and Thomson-CSF in Malakoff near Paris, France, respectively, on the development of a W-Band radar seeker. Subsequently, having moved back to Ulm, Germany, he managed Marketing and Project Control for various millimeter-wave programs in the Guidance and Control Systems Division of TELEFUNKEN SYSTEMTECHNIK, as the company then was called.

From April '90 to February '95 Holger H. Meinel was with DAIMLER-BENZ AEROSPACE AG (Dasa) in Munich, Germany, and was responsible for trend analysis and strategic developments in the area of research and technology concerning Electronics and System Techniques within the Directorate of Corporate Technology of this – then - newly formed company within the DAIMLER-BENZ group.
From March '95 to February ’97 he was with the DAIMLER-BENZ Research Institute in Ulm, Germany; where he was involved in design and research on future traffic control and enhancements systems, for example PROMETHEUS, which was especially for the next generation of automotive radars at 77 GHz, e. g. imaging radar.

From March ‘97 on he was with DAIMLER-BENZ AEROSPACE AG in Ulm, Germany, where he was responsible for System Engineering and Marketing in the Technical Operations Center of the Sensor Systems Division. From mid March to June ‘97 Holger H. Meinel was once again on leave from DAIMLER-BENZ AEROSPACE AG in Ulm, Germany, and was working with Fisher-Rosemount in Eden Prairie, MN, USA, on the development and the start of production of a 24 GHz radar level gauge for industrial process control applications. From July ‘97 to December ’99 he was with DaimlerChrysler Aerospace AG in Ulm, Germany, as technical adviser to the Microwave Factory, being established – then - at the Ulm facility.

From January 2000 to February 2006 Holger H. Meinel was at the DaimlerChrysler headquarters in Stuttgart, Germany, where he was responsible for Scholarships and led the Technology Advisory Group (TAG – worldwide scientific support for research) within the Knowledge Transfer department of DaimlerChrysler R&T – “transaction analysis” instead of “technical expertise”.
From March to August 2006 he was once again on leave from DAIMLER AG in Stuttgart, Germany, working for the German Federal Ministry for Economics and Technologies in Berlin, Germany, on technology transfer for small and medium enterprises.

From September 2006 until August 2014 he has been manager within the Technology Management and Research Policy department of DAIMLER AG corporate R&D in Boeblingen, Germany.
Coming full circle in his career, from May 2010 on he was responsible for external contacts of Daimler AG within the EU-Project MOSARIM (More Safety for All by Radar Interference Mitigation); thus finally coming back-to-his-roots again: ACC radar for cars. EuMW 2012 in Amsterdam was chosen to host the final event of MOSARIM – a full-day-workshop describing the entire 3 year program. 5 sedans from the MOSARIM partners were exhibited – a first for EuMW - to show the packaging of automotive radar sensors.

Since September 2014 Holger H. Meinel is retired; working as an independent consultant, he is especially interested in automotive radar and its future applications, i.e. autonomous driving. Very recently, during the EuMW 2014 in October in Rome , he organized and moderated a successful Workshop on: The social and societal implications of autonomous driving.

Holger H. Meinel is author and co-author of over 160 technical papers, mostly on millimeter-wave integration and application. He edited or was co-author of 3 different books in the mm-wave fields, he initiated and held 15 patents. His research activities have led to the involvement and organization of various corresponding workshops, panel discussions and focused sessions at various events in Germany, the US, Europe and Japan, respectively.
In 1985 he was awarded the 'Walther Blohm` Price of the German Aircraft Industries Association (BDLI) for the development of a 60 GHz range helicopter obstacle warning radar.

Holger H. Meinel has been involved in key-functions with the European Microwave Association (EuMA) since its beginnings. He is one of the 6 founder-members of EuMA. He especially fostered application oriented contributions to EuMW, as he supported and enhanced the student involvement in EuMA.
In 2001 – during the EuMW in Milan, Italy, Holger H. Meinel was awarded with the CERTIFICATE OF APPRECIATION by EuMA for his contributions to EuMC and EuMW.
In 2011 – during the EuMW in Manchester, UK, he was awarded with the EuMA Distinguished Service Award for his lifelong contributions to the microwave community.
